Do you have yellow or discoloured teeth? Dentistry Plus offers Zoom! in-chair teeth whitening, available at all Dentistry Plus locations.

Why do teeth stain?

Teeth can become darkened and discoloureded for many reasons, such as smoking, drinking tea and coffee or even red wine. Occasionally, discolouration can come from factors outside of this. One example is tetracycline staining, where as a child you may have been exposed to an antibiotic (now no longer available) that gave a mottled, yellow/grey tone to the teeth.

What is tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is the process of removing the dark or stained appearance of the teeth, usually by bleaching. However, if your teeth have been stained by tetracycline, we recommend that your teeth are whitened by the application of veneers.

Which is better: at home or at the dentist?

The best option for you is a matter of personal preference. You can choose to have whitening performed in-house at Dentistry Plus (Joondalup, Leeming, Leederville, Maddington or Kwinana) or we can give you your own customised teeth whitening kit for home.

At the dentist: your teeth can be whitened in the dentist's chair. The process is only performed once, and usually takes less than one hour, depending on how many teeth you’d like bleached.

At home: your teeth bleaching or whitening can be performed at home. We’ll take an impression of your teeth, enabling us to make some custom fitting trays for your home bleaching. You’ll then be given a teeth bleaching kit. At night, squeeze a small quantity of bleach inside the tray and place over your teeth for 30-45 minutes before you go to sleep, after you have eaten your evening meal.

Please note that a scale and clean of less than 6 months old is required before we can perform teeth whitening, to ensure best results.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, teeth whitening is very safe – and the concentration used is in compliance with the industry standard TGA. As the dentist will first assess your teeth and general oral fitness, he or she will be able to prescribe the most suitable strength of bleach for your teeth. Also, the process is self-regulating, so if you experience any sensitivity or pain, you can simply stop using it.

Can my teeth be whitened?

Most people can benefit from tooth bleaching or whitening, however there are a few exceptions:

Get a brighter, whiter smile

The results of tooth whitening can be remarkable. When your teeth are bleached just a few shades lighter, they look cleaner and healthier, making you look fitter, younger and more confident.
