Why do teeth rot?
Tooth decay is caused by a plaque, which is a layer of bacteria from your saliva that forms on your teeth.
The best way to avoid tooth decay is with healthy oral habits like brushing and flossing.
However, once tooth decay has started, so must treatment if you want to save the tooth.
What are your options?
Here’s typically what we combat rotting teeth with.

If we manage to catch things early we can attempt to restore your tooth with fluoride treatment.
We’re most likely to catch these things during regular dental check ups, so make sure you’re booking those in to catch tooth decay, along with a list of other potential problems, early.
Fillings are the most common treatment for tooth decay, after drilling out the decaying area.
The filling allows the tooth to be restored to its original shape and function.
If there has been a bit more decay of the tooth, and a fair bit of the tooth needs to be drilled in order to clean the area – a crown may be necessary to restore the original shape and function.
When the decay reaches the pulp (the inner part of your tooth), the diseased pulp is removed and replaced with a filling.
This is quite a specialised operation, which is available at Dentistry Plus.
When the infection is too bad, the tooth has to be extracted.
Then, you’re faced with how to replaced the tooth. We do not recommend just leaving a gap between your teeth as not having a full row of teeth creates vulnerabilities for the teeth next to the gap.
A bridge is a solution that puts an artificial tooth between the teeth either side of the gap – but the best solution is a single implant, which will stay in place better and will also help with ensuring that there’s enough stimulation in your gums to keep them healthy.
